Dr. Hovland was serving as dean of the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina devastated the city. The storm flooded 80% of New Orleans and heavily damaged the LSU School of Dentistry. Many faculty, students and staff lost their homes and sadly, some patients lost their lives. Dr. Hovland will share the remarkable stories of the School of Dentistry's recovery — some moving, some humorous. He will discuss the challenges of relocating the dental school to temporary facilities 80 miles away, and he will share the outpouring of support from both the local and national dental community. He will also share the experiences and the lessons learned from such an event.
