Dr. Lamster received his DDS from State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1977, his MMSc from Harvard University in 1980 and a certificate in periodontology from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Lamster is dean and professor of dentistry at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.

Dr. Ryan is a professor of oral biology and pathology and the director of clinical research at the School of Dental Medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, as well as a member of the medical staff at the Stony Brook University Medical Center. She is active in teaching, practice and research.

She directs liaison and collaborative activities with healthcare organizations focused on medical-dental interface and accreditation.

Dentists have an opportunity to make an impact on the disease burden associated with diabetes. This course will provide an overview of oral findings associated with diabetes and the effect of periodontal disease on metabolic control with an emphasis on patient management and assessment of diabetes in the dental office.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:1. Understand the epidemiology of diabetes mellitus in the U.S. and the importance of early diagnosis
2. Understand pathophysiology of diabetes and factors related to providing care to people with diabetes
3. Understand risk assessment for diabetes in dental practice and the use of suitable screening tests
