John Kouletsis, AIA, EDAC, Vice President, Facilities Planning & Design - National Facilities Services, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc.
As head of planning and design for all Kaiser Permanente buildings, John Kouletsis developed a comprehensive set of design criteria that ensure building’s life-cycle cost savings, durability, and efficiency, and enhance users’ experience. Created with hundreds of health care professionals, these criteria established Kaiser Permanente as a leading proponent of evidence-based- and green building design.
John is a sponsor of the Sidney R. Garfield Health Care Innovation Center, a living laboratory where design ideas are tested in a hands-on, mocked-up clinical environment.
John is the vice president/president-elect of the San Francisco chapter of the AIA; a member of the Facility Guidelines Institute Healthcare Guidelines Revision Committee; and is on the Center for Health Design’s EDAC Advisory Council. John received the Center for Health Design’s Change Maker Award in 2011.
Description
The 2014 Guidelines for Health Care Facilities: Design and Construction of Hospitals and Outpatient Facilities will address the need to create safe environments to promote safe medication use. As a major patient safety consideration, the Health Guidelines Revision Committee is dedicated to supporting all facets of this process. The speaker will link the safety rule’s importance to CMS' Value-Based Purchasing Program, which will begin in 2013. Attendees will learn about new ideas, equipment, and techniques in medication safety. This session will enable attendees to:
Discuss facilities-based environment basics for promoting safe medication use in an effort to reduce the risk of medication errors. Name three medication safety practices that are supported by implementing the 2014 Guidelines. Discuss and explain the importance of the physical environment and the correct application of medication safety initiatives. Employ strategies to reduce the number of patient medication errors.
