Description
Physician alignment will remain a key issue into the foreseeable future. Although many prescriptions
have been offered, virtually all address the problem too narrowly. Explore a comprehensive approach to
resolution through a case study from Frederick Memorial Hospital.
You will learn to:
1. Develop a better diagnosis of the "problem" by looking at it from the physicians' standpoint as
well as the hospital's.
2. Recognize that money is important but that alignment must be more comprehensive than
economics.
3. Understand that one size will not fit all physicians and hospitals. The "right answer" will vary
with geography, style of practice (e.g., academic versus community physician), specialty,
physician age, and other factors.
4. Identify the importance of a long-term perspective (the solution will be evolutionary, not
revolutionary).
5. Understand the importance of a transition plan as hospitals and physicians move to new models
of alignment.
