David Kantor is president of Kantor Consulting Group, a management consulting firm which supports health care organizations in addressing their planning, strategy, marketing, managed care, and physician integration issues. Prior to establishing Kantor Consulting Group in 1996, David served as a senior executive in a variety of planning/marketing and operational roles with two integrated systems. He is a frequent speaker at national and regional programs on a variety of strategic and planning issues. David received his MBA from the Wharton School.

Nancy Paton is the Senior Vice President, Marketing & Communications, University Hospitals, Cleveland, Ohio. She leads the marketing and communications strategy for the entire health system. University Hospitals serves patients through an integrated network of hospitals, outpatient centers, and primary care physicians at more than 150 locations throughout northern Ohio. With nearly 25,000 physicians and employees comprising UH and its partner hospitals, UH is northern Ohio’s second-largest employer. She is a past president of SHSMD and past chair of the Society’s Leadership Development and Membership Committees.

The U.S. healthcare delivery system is huge and complicated. Healthcare is a two-trillion-dollar sector that accounts for 16 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product. Understanding its size, scope, and complexity can help improve the performance of everyone who works in healthcare.Orientation to Healthcare focuses on the role of four key groups in the healthcare system — patients, hospitals, physicians, and insurers/managed care organizations. In addition to defining each of these groups, their key characteristics, and their major challenges and issues, you will understand the interrelationships among the groups and other elements of the healthcare system.
